Diversity, Inclusion & Access

Who gets into the profession and who advances — access to networks, hiring decisions, and what diversity is actually for.

What the archive argues

The corpus does not argue about whether diversity is worth pursuing; it argues about what the argument is. Leon Brujis (Ep 070) rejects the moral case outright: diversity is not the right thing to do, it is the cognitive diversity that blocks groupthink and produces alpha, and moral framing is what makes it box-ticking. Joshua Berggrun (Ep 064), answering the same opening question, says it is fundamentally the right thing to do, with better client service secondary.

Underneath sits a diagnosis most guests share: the constraint is access, not supply. Rich Grant and Christine Nowaczyk (Ep 041) say underrepresented candidates are not hitting a ceiling; they do not know the room exists. Michelle Chao (Ep 063) went from an EA seat she was told had no growth path to SVP of business development at the same firm, on exposure plus a boss who opened the door. Ernie Lyles (Ep 061) attacks the pedigree filter with his own record: his best and worst analyst both came from Yale.

The framing shifts. In 2020 and 2021 the work is relational and internal: Jamil Sanders (Eps 039 and 040) begins with the self-discounting a Black advisor does before the meeting. The 2022 episodes turn institutional. Brandon Hawkins (Ep 069) says associations of executives with hiring power spend it curating heritage-month calendars, while Eric Gregg (Ep 081) reports about 80 percent of accounting marketers now field client diversity questions in RFPs.

Nobody argues the bar should move. Brujis would refuse a job offered because of how he looks, Grant calls token hires the worst available outcome, and Lyles and Hawkins describe the work as searching harder, not screening lower. Nobody argues against the premise either — a gap worth naming. The line to carry out belongs to Charmone Adams (Ep 050): firms achieve the diversity half and fail the inclusion half, and a room where the same subset still decides has changed nothing.
