Business Development as Craft

BD reframed as service, problem-solving and follow-through rather than selling — who owns it, how it's learned, whether it can be systematized.

What the archive argues

Business development in professional services is not sales. It is problem-solving and follow-through, and the deal is a byproduct. Lenny Dacanay (Ep 012) disowns his own earlier sales framing and calls the business developer a problem solver. Dan Lee (Ep 038) blames a decade of poor results on having thought of himself as a salesman. Adam Klein (Ep 053) calls sales a four-letter word and tells people to say help instead.

Gary Braun (Ep 097) turns that consensus over. He will run the search-and-replace to keep a CPA firm comfortable, but he argues the refusal is what breaks the work: diagnose a problem a client cannot fix, propose a fix, and you are selling, so disowning it only keeps the discipline uninstalled. Across roughly 400 client companies the same failure repeats: two or three surface questions, then a dump of everything you know.

The frame moves over four years. In 2020 it sits inside individual character: Tom Boniface (Ep 002) on the variables you control, Grant Marcks (Ep 003) on relationship equity. By 2021 the argument is definitional. Polly Mack and Heather Madland (Ep 032) call it a career, not a role, and refuse deal counts as a metric; Stephen Madsen (Ep 058) audits his funnel and finds city visits converting about ten times better than calls. By 2023 the unit of analysis is the firm, and Timothy Keith (Ep 106) puts 60 to 70 percent of revenue with 5 percent of the people.

Nobody defends the pitch. Jim Ries (Ep 051) never sells at first contact, Emily Ackerman (Ep 059) refuses to cold call, Ken Marblestone (Ep 060) will not mention a referral. Nobody defends the extrovert: Mark Bober (Ep 030), Ryan Grand (Ep 033) and Alex Egan (Ep 101) all name introverts as their strongest producers. Both agreements go untested, which is the gap. Copy the guests who kept score: Madsen's funnel, Doug LaLone's monthly scorecard (Ep 044).
