Mental Health & Burnout

Burnout, stress, mental illness and recovery inside professional services — and whether the fix is leaving or reshaping the role.

What the archive argues

Seven episodes on burnout share an unusual position: leaving is rarely the fix. Erik Daly (Ep 016) calls the all-or-nothing view of a legal career a false choice; his own move from Chicago to Grand Rapids is the evidence. It improved his work-life balance and cured nothing. Randy Crabtree (Ep 100) lands in the same place, arguing that mid-career burnout usually calls for telling your supervisor what you actually want and changing service line, not changing firms.

Both are specific about the signals. Daly developed chronic back pain and fatigue in his late twenties as a deal attorney and wrote them off as part of the job; he now reads them as the first sign of stress and depression. Crabtree calls burnout a form of mental illness while saying he does not know whether that is the true definition. He narrates a stroke in midlife and five following years of depression, PTSD and panic attacks, and says it took three counselors before one fit.

Daly reports that attorneys overwhelmingly cope alone and that the profession still reads disclosure as weakness. He is careful that his own openness is his choice, not a recommendation; a helpline, he says, may be the right first step for someone else. He and Stephanie Gaffin (Ep 037) converge on scale: ten minutes of exercise, five of breathing, a minute of meditation at night.

Responsibility moves across the run. In 2020 Gary Lewis (Ep 001) puts burnout on his own reaction and calls blaming clients and portfolio companies his mistake. By 2022 and 2023 it sits with firms: David Hartley (Ep 094) says leaders must watch for overwork because people will not flag it, and Crabtree points to a firm that capped tax season at 45 hours and finished more work at higher profitability. No guest here left the profession and says leaving was right; that absence is the theme's gap.
