Career Transitions & Risk

Changing lanes — leaving a stable job, going independent, second careers, and how professionals price risk.

What the archive argues

Six episodes touch this theme, and they converge on an unusual reading of risk: it sits on both sides of the ledger. Ken Marblestone (Ep 060) left a large corporation after concluding the role no longer fit him and was becoming a health problem, and argues poor fit is not a private cost — you are degrading the experience of everyone you work with. John Bly (Ep 083) takes apart the destination rather than the exit, saying Big 4 partnership looks like the pinnacle from outside while those partners are functionally employees with a K-1.

What the leap buys is where these guests are most specific and least romantic. Isatou Smith (Ep 096) did not surpass her prior corporate income until year four and was still seriously considering going back in year three; her position is that the return is autonomy, and that anyone driven by earnings should stay. Marblestone says twice it is not for everybody. Brett Hickey (Ep 078) drew no salary for 11 years and judges a career decision on the slope of the ten-year curve rather than the starting point.

Two guests independently name the same failure mode. Smith says watching peers buy cars and houses while you are still building is the main reason people quit the path; Lisa Howze (Ep 099) says the only real competition is the person in the mirror. Nobody here sells the leap. The instruction that survives all six episodes is to price what staying costs you, then be honest about whether autonomy — not income, not balance — is what you actually want.
